S9.com Biography Website Sold for $400k

s9.com sold S9.com Biography Website Sold for $400k

The website S9.com sold on flippa for an estimated $400k on Saturday October 23, 2010. There was a bidding war of 61 bids for this premium website and domain. S9, a biography website, claims to receive almost 100k uniques and 200k pageviews a month, yet only makes about $300/month in revenue. I personally think this site was “sold” for this much was because of its 2 letter domain registered in 1997, and also because it is PR8.

Again, congrats to the seller and buyer. This sale shows that the market is hungry for high quality websites with quality traffic.

“Are you looking for the coolest biographical dictionary online? If so, you should definitely consider visiting s9.com, the biographical dictionary that features more than 33,000 notable people from the ancient times to today.”

Update: Heres a link to what I believe the buyer, who wants a new wordpress theme. http://99designs.com/custom-wordpress-themes/contests/wordpress-design-biography-site-57500

Social Media Networks Explained [Infographic]

Here is a great infographic showing how useful social media websites are for promoting your business.  My favorite is Youtube and Facebook, as they are the most widely used sites on the internet today and have active communities which you can target users, and get the most exposure. Of course, other sites provide other benefits, such as SEO, and development of valuable backlinks from other blogs who pick up your “viral” content, and you can see it in the following infographic of social media networks.

Internet Brands sues Xenforo over infringement of vBulletin

xenforo sued Internet Brands sues Xenforo over infringement of vBulletin

Internet Brands, the owner of the popular software, vBulletin,  has commenced a lawsuit in the courts of England and Wales against Xenforo, and its founders, Kier, Mike and Ashley. The lawsuit is about these claims: infringement of our copyrighted intellectual property, breach of contract, and unfair business practices.
The suit is simple: we claim that Kier, Mike, and Ashley have infringed and violated contracts they signed with us to gain unfair business advantage. As such, Xenforo’s software unfairly stands on the shoulders of more than a decade of development by Jelsoft. Internet Brands owns this intellectual property.

In total, we are stunned by the actions of Kier, Mike, and Ashley and believe they must not fully understand the laws of copyrights, contract or business torts. Perhaps Kier and Mike think they have “refactored” enough of the code to skirt copyright law. Our analysis strongly indicates otherwise and we believe anyone skilled in understanding such things will concur. Perhaps they are of the misguided belief that because they created some of the vBulletin code as Jelsoft employees, they somehow have unique claims to that property. If so, that too is wrong. Kier’s and Mike’s work as Jelsoft employees was the exclusive property of their employer, and the former owners of Jelsoft not only paid Kier and Mike well during their employment, Kier was paid a handsome bonus when Internet Brands bought the business, although no such payment was required.

If the proverbial shoe were on the other foot and rather than buying vBulletin, Internet Brands had instructed our engineers to essentially copy the software, we would have been law breakers. But Internet Brands chose to play by copyright rules and bought the vBulletin intellectual property. And, in our opinion, no matter how Kier, Mike, and Ashley try to “spin” their actions, they have not. A key test for infringement is a determination as to whether a substantial portion of the underlying work amounts to an expression of the prior work. We believe we will be able to easily show that Xenforo is infringing under this test. We have numerous other claims against Xenforo that we believe are equally strong.

We trust that software purchasers understand the risks of infringement of copyright law and act accordingly. We have requested that Kier, Mike and Ashley refrain from selling the software while the issues, inclusive of our infringement claims, are heard in the courts. We intend to pursue our rights broadly and vigorously.
We consider Kier and Mike to be talented developers, but ones who potentially fail to grasp the implications of their actions.

We imagine that many of you in the community will have questions or concerns and we want to be as open and straightforward with all of you throughout this process as possible; however, since this matter is now being handled by the court system, we may be limited in some regards to what we can discuss.

Google Analytics Tip: Exporting Google Analytics

Google Analytics allows you to export any of your reports into PDF, comma separated values (CSV), tab separated values (TSV), or Extensible Markup Language (XML). You can also email the report to anyone that would requests it, and it would be ideal to export it directly when selling a website, instead of taking a screenshot to provide more trust to the buyer.

Google Analytics Google Analytics Tip: Exporting Google Analytics

To export a report:

  1. Navigate to the report you’d like to export. Analytics will export the report with the settings currently showing on your screen, so make sure that your date range and other settings are as you would like them.
  2. Click Export, below the report title.
  3. Select one of the four export format options:
    • PDF – portable document format. You’ll need the free Adobe Reader software in order to view this file.
    • XML – extensible markup language.
    • Excel – Microsoft Excel-formatted spreadsheet.
    • TSV – tab separated values. This format can be read in most spreadsheet applications or text editors.
  4. Your file will be generated automatically.

GoDaddy Donates $500,000 To Haiti

godaddy GoDaddy Donates $500,000 To Haiti
It seems GoDaddy is making a step in the right direction by helping the victims in Haiti. As a registrant of domains from this site, I hope this will lead to better investments made in their own business.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Jan. 13, 2010) – Go Daddy is donating a half-a-million dollars to help victims of yesterday’s earthquake in Haiti. Go Daddy’s philanthropic CEO and Founder Bob Parsons initiated the move immediately after learning about the high magnitude earthquake in Haiti.

“The moment we saw the news, we knew we had to help,” Parsons said. “This devastating earthquake killed thousands and thousands of people and conditions for survivors are deplorable. Those of us not affected by this disaster need to step up – we at Go Daddy feel it’s our duty to lead the way.”

Today Go Daddy sent a check for $500,000 to Hope for Haiti, an organization committed to making a difference in Haiti by focusing on education, nutrition and healthcare.

Hope for Haiti Executive Director Elizabeth Davison was in tears as she spoke with Go Daddy executives by phone this afternoon. “We’re overwhelmed by Go Daddy’s quick response and generous contribution,” Davison said. “We plan to use this money to help rebuild the hospital and the orphanage in Port-au-Prince.”

Go Daddy is based in Scottsdale, Ariz. and is the world’s largest domain name registrar and a leading Web hosting provider. The Web giant is bigger than its five closest competitors combined and in spite of its reputation for edgy commercials, Go Daddy has leveraged its success to help others again and again over the years.

In fact, Go Daddy has a history of jumping in to help generate financial support for victims of natural disasters, including contributions to Thailand tsunami victims in 2004, Katrina hurricane victims in 2005 and Iowa flood victims in 2008. Last year alone, Go Daddy donated nearly $2.5 million to a wide variety of charities, including those aimed at medical research, domestic violence and education.

Go Daddy has more than 7.5 million customers around the world, including in Haiti.
